Printed and embroidered pieces fail early for one main reason: they get washed exactly like everything else in the load. A few small changes to how to wash printed hoodies and similar pieces make a real difference to how long the design actually lasts.
Turn the item inside out before washing — this alone is the single biggest factor in preventing cracking or fading on a printed design, since it stops the print from rubbing directly against other fabric. Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle; heat is what breaks down both print adhesive and embroidery thread fastest. Skip the tumble dryer where possible, or use a low, no-heat setting, since dryer heat does more cumulative damage than the wash cycle itself.
Ironing directly over a print or embroidered patch will damage it almost immediately — if the item needs ironing, do it inside-out or place a cloth between the iron and the design.
