Baby's First Wardrobe: What You Actually Need vs What You Don't

New parents are often given, and buy, far more than a baby actually needs in the first few months — and a lot of it goes unworn because babies grow out of sizes faster than most people expect. A realistic baby wardrobe essentials checklist saves money and drawer space.

The genuine essentials: 5–7 one-piece bodysuits per size, since these get changed multiple times a day; 2–3 sleepsuits for overnight; and one or two soft, easy-to-remove outer layers for outings, rather than a full 'outfit' wardrobe. Anything with a lot of buttons, ties, or a rigid structure tends to sit unworn — ease of changing wins over how it looks in a photo, especially in the first six months.

Buy the next size up more than you buy the current size. Babies typically spend less time in each size than parents expect, and a slightly large item gets worn far longer than one bought to fit exactly right on day one.
