Polo or T-shirt for smart casual? If you have to choose one, choose the polo. Its collar and placket give your outfit structure, which is what lifts a look from casual to smart casual. But a T-shirt is not ruled out: a plain, heavyweight tee in a dark or neutral colour, worn under a jacket or overshirt with dark jeans or trousers and clean shoes, can look just as considered. The real difference is how much work the rest of the outfit has to do.
Below, we break down what separates the two, when each one is the better call, and how to wear both so you look put-together without looking like you tried too hard. If you are new to the dress code itself, start with our guide to what smart casual means for men.
Why the collar matters so much
Smart casual sits between relaxed weekend clothes and office tailoring. The details that push an outfit towards the smart end are structure, clean lines and a sense of intention. A collar is the quickest way to add all three near your face, which is where people look first.
A polo gives you that collar built in. A T-shirt does not, so the structure has to come from somewhere else: a jacket, an overshirt, a sharp pair of trousers or very good fabric. That is why a polo is the safer choice when you are unsure, and why a T-shirt rewards a little more thought.
Polo vs T-shirt: the side-by-side comparison
| Polo shirt | T-shirt | |
|---|---|---|
| How smart it reads on its own | Smart casual | Casual |
| What gives it structure | Collar and half-button placket | Fabric weight and fit |
| Works without a jacket? | Yes | Sometimes, if plain and heavyweight |
| Best under | Crewnecks, quarter-zips, jackets | Overshirts, jackets, open shirts |
| Best with | Chinos, tailored trousers, dark denim | Dark denim, straight-leg jeans, smart joggers |
| Good for | Casual office, lunches, family events, dinner | Weekends, travel, relaxed evenings |
When to choose a polo
Reach for a polo when the setting leans smarter but a full shirt would feel stiff. Think a casual Friday at work, a long lunch, meeting a partner's family or a dinner where you do not know the dress code. The polo answers the question for you: it is clearly more than a T-shirt, yet just as comfortable.
Fit is where a polo succeeds or fails. The shoulders should sit at or just past your natural shoulder, the sleeves should end around mid-bicep, and the hem should finish around the hip if you plan to leave it untucked. Keep the collar flat and crisp, and leave the top button open.
Our Luxury Mens Regular Fit Polo Shirt is built for exactly this job: a lapel collar with half-button closure, raglan sleeves and a 240 gsm knit of 49% polyester, 42% cotton and 9% spandex, which gives it a little stretch for comfort through the day. If you want something with more character for the weekend, the Colour-Block Polo Shirt pairs a ribbed collar and half-button placket with a panelled design in a 240 gsm blend of 65% cotton and 35% polyester, cut with a relaxed drop shoulder.

When a T-shirt works for smart casual
A T-shirt can absolutely be smart casual, but it has to earn it. Three things make the difference:
- Weight. A heavier cotton tee drapes rather than clings, holds its shape and does not show every crease. Thin, see-through jersey reads as underwear, not outerwear.
- Plainness. Solid colours look considered. Big graphics, slogans and large logos pull the outfit firmly back to casual.
- A layer on top. A tee under an overshirt, bomber, harrington-style jacket or unstructured blazer instantly becomes smart casual, because the jacket supplies the structure the collar would have.
The Heavyweight Drop-Shoulder Cotton T-Shirt is a good example: 100% cotton at 300 gsm, with a loose fit and drop shoulder that sits well under a jacket. If you prefer something a touch lighter, the Luxury Essential Cotton T-Shirt is 100% cotton at 260 gsm with a relaxed, oversized silhouette. With either, size for the shoulders and check the sleeve does not swamp your arm if you want the cleaner, smarter version of the look.
Four outfits: two polo, two T-shirt
1. The dependable polo
Navy or black polo, dark straight-leg jeans, white leather trainers. Nothing clever, and that is the point. It works for most smart-casual occasions from spring to autumn.
2. The polo for colder months
Polo under a plain crewneck sweatshirt or knit, collar sitting neatly over the neckline, with chinos and suede shoes or boots. The collar adds structure to the knit and stops it looking like loungewear.
3. The jacketed tee
Heavyweight white or black tee, a dark jacket or overshirt, black jeans and minimal trainers. The jacket does the smart work, the tee keeps it relaxed.
4. The tonal tee
Tee, trousers and shoes in shades of one colour, for example stone, sand and brown, or charcoal, grey and black. Tonal outfits look intentional, which makes even a T-shirt feel dressed.
Common mistakes with both
- Sizing up for comfort, which leaves the shoulders drooping and the body billowing.
- Wearing a polo with a curled or faded collar.
- Choosing a thin or heavily printed tee and expecting it to read smart.
- Letting sports shorts or running shoes undo an otherwise sharp top.
Frequently asked questions
Is a polo shirt smarter than a T-shirt?
Yes. The collar and placket give a polo more structure, so it reads smarter on its own. A T-shirt can match it, but usually only with a jacket or overshirt on top.
Can I wear a T-shirt to a smart-casual dress code?
Often, yes. Choose a plain, heavyweight tee, add a jacket or overshirt, and keep the trousers and shoes smart. If the invitation leans smarter, choose a polo or shirt instead.
Should I tuck in a polo or a T-shirt?
Tuck a polo when the hem falls well below your belt or you are wearing tailored trousers. Most T-shirts look better untucked for smart casual, as long as the hem finishes around the hip.
Choose with intention
There is no wrong answer here, only a considered one. A polo gives you polish with almost no effort; a good T-shirt gives you ease, as long as the rest of the outfit carries some structure.
