French Terry vs Fleece: Which Hoodie Fabric Is Right for You?

BALIVENO Fleeced Boxy Hoodie

French terry and fleece are the two fabrics behind almost every hoodie, sweatshirt and jogger you own. They are often made from the same fibres, but they feel, wear and wash differently. Knowing the difference helps you choose the right piece for the season, and for the way you actually live.

French terry vs fleece: the short answer

  • French terry has a smooth face and small loops on the inside. It is lighter, more breathable and better for spring, summer evenings and layering.
  • Fleece starts as the same looped knit, but the loops are brushed until they turn fluffy. That traps air, so fleece is warmer and softer, and better for autumn and winter.

What is French terry?

French terry is a knitted fabric with a flat outer surface and soft loops on the reverse. Because those loops are left intact, air moves through the fabric easily and it wicks moisture away from the skin. It feels cool to the touch, drapes well and holds its shape through repeated washing.

What is fleece?

Fleece begins as a looped knit. The inner loops are then brushed with fine wire rollers, which raises the fibres into a soft, fuzzy pile. That pile traps warm air, which is why a fleece hoodie feels cosy straight away.

In the Baliveno range, the Fleeced Boxy Hoodie (from £56.28) is a thick, 350 g/m² cotton-polyester blend with a boxy fit and drop shoulders. For a lighter, smoother option, the Premium Mid-weight Hoodie (from £35) has a 100% cotton face at 280 g/m².

Which is better for a hoodie?

  • Choose fleece if your hoodie is your main outer layer from October to March, or if you want that instant soft, warm feel.
  • Choose French terry if you run warm, wear your hoodie to the gym, or want a piece you can wear in April and September without overheating.

Weight matters too. A 420 GSM French terry will still feel warmer than a 280 GSM fleece. Our guide what does GSM mean in clothing? explains how to read fabric weights.

Which is better for joggers and sweatpants?

Fleece joggers are the classic winter choice for comfort at home and on cold walks. French terry joggers look sharper, breathe better and are easier to dress up with a clean trainer and a tee. How to care for French terry and fleece

  1. Wash inside out on a cold or 30°C cycle to protect the face and any prints.
  2. Wash with similar fabrics. Avoid washing fleece with towels or denim, which rub and cause pilling.
  3. Skip fabric softener on fleece. It can flatten the brushed pile.
  4. Air dry flat or on a hanger. High tumble-dryer heat shrinks cotton and roughens fleece.

Frequently asked questions

Is French terry warm enough for winter?

A heavyweight French terry (350 GSM or more) can be, especially layered under a coat. For standalone winter wear, fleece is warmer.

Does French terry shrink?

High-cotton French terry can shrink slightly on a hot wash. Wash cold and air dry to keep the fit.

Why does fleece pill?

Brushing raises loose fibre ends, and friction twists them into small balls. Gentle washing and a fabric shaver keep fleece looking new.
