Cotton vs Polyester Hoodie: Which Blend Should You Buy?

BALIVENO Premium Mid-weight Hoodie in black, an 80% cotton 20% recycled polyester blend

When comparing a cotton vs polyester hoodie, the short answer is this: cotton feels softer and breathes better, polyester holds its shape and dries faster, and a blend gives you a bit of both. Most hoodies sit somewhere in between, so the real question is which balance suits how you wear yours. This guide explains what each fibre does, how common blends behave and how to choose the right one, using real fabric details from our own range.

What cotton brings to a hoodie

Cotton is a natural plant fibre and the reason a good hoodie feels comforting the moment you put it on.

  • Soft, familiar feel against the skin.
  • Breathability. Cotton lets air and moisture pass through, so it feels less clammy indoors.
  • Absorbency. It takes up moisture rather than letting it sit on the skin, though that also means it dries more slowly.
  • Takes dye and prints well, giving rich colour and a matte, natural finish.

The trade-offs: cotton can shrink if washed or dried too hot, it creases more easily, and very heavy all-cotton hoodies take a while to dry.

What polyester brings to a hoodie

Polyester is a synthetic fibre. On its own it is less common in classic hoodies, but blended with cotton it does a lot of useful work.

  • Shape retention. It resists stretching and shrinking, so cuffs, hems and hoods stay neater.
  • Quick drying and less prone to creasing.
  • Strength, which helps a hoodie stand up to frequent washing.

The trade-offs: polyester is less breathable than cotton, can hold on to odours more readily and, because its fibres are strong, any bobbles that form tend to stay attached rather than falling away. Our guide on how to stop hoodie pilling covers how to keep that under control.

Cotton vs polyester vs blends: side by side

Fabric Feel Breathability Shape and shrink resistance Drying time Best for
100% cotton Softest, most natural High Lower, wash cool Slowest Everyday comfort, heavyweight streetwear
Cotton-rich blend (e.g. 80/20) Soft, smooth face Good Good Moderate All-round daily wear
50/50 blend Soft, slightly sleeker Moderate Very good Faster Easy care, active days
Polyester-rich blend Smooth, structured Lower Excellent Fastest Boxy shapes that hold their line

Four BALIVENO hoodies, four different blends

Looking at real pieces makes the differences easier to picture. All figures below come from the fabric details on each product page.

  1. Unisex Oversized Heavyweight Hoodie: 100% cotton at a very substantial 530 gsm, with an oversized fit and drop shoulders. This is the pick if you want the dense, natural feel of all-cotton and do not mind treating it gently (a 30°C gentle cycle and low tumble dry, per the care label).
  2. Premium Mid-weight Hoodie: 80% cotton and 20% recycled polyester at 280 g/m², with a 100% cotton face, a regular fit and under 5% shrinkage listed. Note that some colours differ: Heather Gray is 70/30, while Charcoal and Oatmeal Heather are 60/40. A good middle ground.
  3. Heavy Blend Zip Hoodie: an even 50% cotton, 50% polyester fleece at 8 oz/yd² (271 g/m²), using air-jet spun yarn for reduced pilling, with a metal zip and regular fit. A practical, easy-care option.
  4. Essential Oversized Boxy Fit Fleece Hoodie: 53% polyester, 42% cotton and 5% other fibres at 345 gsm, fleece-lined, with a boxy oversized cut. The higher polyester share helps that boxy shape keep its line.

A note on recycled polyester and fabric weight

You will see "recycled polyester" on several labels, including our Premium Mid-weight Hoodie. It is polyester made from previously used plastic material rather than newly produced fibre, and in a hoodie blend it plays the same role as standard polyester: adding strength and helping the garment keep its shape.

It is also worth separating fibre from weight. A 280 g/m² cotton-rich hoodie and a 530 gsm all-cotton hoodie are both "cotton hoodies", yet they feel completely different. The heavier one drapes more, feels denser and takes longer to dry; the lighter one is easier to layer under a jacket. When comparing two hoodies, check the composition and the weight together before deciding.

How to choose: five quick questions

  1. Do you run warm? Lean towards cotton or a cotton-rich blend for breathability.
  2. Do you wash often and tumble dry? A 50/50 or polyester-rich blend copes better with frequent laundering.
  3. Which fit do you want? Boxy and structured silhouettes benefit from polyester's shape retention; relaxed, drapey fits suit cotton.
  4. How heavy should it feel? Weight and fibre are separate choices. Read our guide to French terry vs fleece to understand how the knit changes warmth and handle too.
  5. Is it a printed piece? A cotton or cotton-faced surface usually gives the most natural-looking print.

Care tips for each fabric

  • All cotton: wash cool, reshape while damp and dry on low or flat to limit shrinkage.
  • Blends: wash inside out on a gentle cycle to reduce friction and pilling.
  • Polyester-rich: avoid high heat when drying or ironing, and wash promptly after wear to keep it fresh.

Whatever the blend, always follow the care label on your specific piece.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 100% cotton hoodie better than a blend?

Not automatically. All-cotton feels the most natural and breathes best, while blends hold their shape, dry faster and handle frequent washing well. "Better" depends on how you wear and wash it.

Which is warmer, cotton or polyester?

Warmth depends more on fabric weight and construction, such as a brushed fleece interior, than on fibre alone. A heavy cotton hoodie and a heavy blended fleece can both be very warm.

Do polyester hoodies pill more?

Blends with polyester can show bobbles that stay attached because the fibres are strong. Yarn quality matters too: our Heavy Blend Zip Hoodie uses air-jet spun yarn for reduced pilling.
