A jacket bought on price alone tends to get replaced within a year or two, which usually ends up costing more than investing in a winter jacket that's actually built for the job in the first place.
The features worth paying for are the ones you can't easily see in a photo: a wind-resistant outer shell, a fill that keeps its loft after repeated compression in a bag, and taped or sealed seams if you're regularly out in rain rather than just cold. A jacket that looks similar to a cheaper one in a product photo can perform completely differently in actual weather.
Fit is the other place people compromise unnecessarily. A jacket needs enough room to layer a jumper underneath without restricting arm movement, but not so much room that it stops trapping warmth effectively — oversized isn't automatically warmer.
