Most cotton and canvas totes are easy to clean: empty the bag, shake out the crumbs, treat any stains, then wash it on a cool, gentle cycle (or by hand) and let it air dry flat or hanging by the base. The key to how to clean a tote bag without shrinking or fading it is low heat from start to finish. Below you will find a step-by-step method for both machine and hand washing, a stain guide, and tips to keep your tote fresher for longer.
Step 1: Check the label and the material
Totes come in everything from lightweight cotton to heavy denim, canvas, jute and coated fabrics. Before washing:
- Read the care label if there is one, and follow its temperature guidance.
- Identify the fabric. Cotton and organic cotton totes, like our BALIVENO Everyday Eco Tote Bag and BALIVENO Essential Eco Tote Bag (both 100% certified organic cotton), are generally happy with a cool wash.
- Look for prints, leather trims or coatings. Printed designs need a gentler wash; leather handles and wipe-clean coatings should not be soaked.
- Test for colour run on dark totes. Dab a hidden seam with a damp white cloth. If dye transfers, wash the bag alone.
Step 2: Prepare the bag
- Empty every pocket. Receipts, lip balm and pens are the usual culprits behind washing-machine disasters.
- Turn the bag inside out and shake it over a bin to remove crumbs, sand and fluff.
- Brush or lint-roll the seams. Grit collects in the corners, where it can rub fibres during a wash.
- Turn it back the right way if it has a print, or leave it inside out to protect the outer face. Inside out is usually best for printed totes.
Step 3: Treat stains first
| Stain | What to do |
|---|---|
| Food and drink | Blot (don't rub), rinse from the back with cold water, then work in a little liquid detergent before washing. |
| Grease or oil | Sprinkle with cornflour or baking soda to absorb the oil, leave for 15 minutes, brush off, then apply washing-up liquid and rinse. |
| Ink | Dab gently with rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad, testing a hidden area first, then rinse and wash. |
| Make-up | Use a drop of micellar water or mild detergent on a cloth, working from the outside of the mark inwards. |
| Mud | Let it dry completely, brush off as much as possible, then treat what is left with detergent. |
Step 4: Machine wash or hand wash
Machine washing a cotton tote
- Select a cool, gentle or delicate cycle. 30°C is a sensible default for most cotton totes unless the label says otherwise.
- Use a mild liquid detergent. Powder can leave white residue in the folds of heavier fabrics.
- Wash with similar colours, or alone if it is new and dark.
- Pop smaller totes in a laundry bag to stop handles tangling around other items.
Hand washing a tote
- Fill a sink or basin with cool water and a little mild detergent.
- Submerge the tote and gently squeeze the suds through the fabric.
- Use a soft brush on grubby handles and the base, which take the most contact.
- Rinse thoroughly in clean water, then press out the excess without wringing.
Heavier fabrics take more water and more time to rinse. Our Organic Denim Tote Bag is 100% organic cotton at 305 g/m², so give it an extra rinse to make sure no detergent is left in the weave.
Step 5: Dry it properly
- Reshape while damp. Pull the seams straight and square off the corners.
- Air dry flat or hang it upside down by the base, so the weight of the water does not stretch the handles.
- Keep it out of strong direct sunlight if it is dark or printed, to reduce fading.
- Skip the tumble dryer. High heat can shrink cotton and distort the shape.
- Iron on the reverse once dry if you want a crisp finish, and never iron directly on a print.
Totes that aren't cotton
- Jute or straw: do not submerge. Spot clean with a barely damp cloth and let it dry fully.
- Coated or wipe-clean fabrics: wipe with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth, then dry with a towel.
- Leather handles or trims: keep them dry. Spot clean the fabric around them and use a suitable leather cleaner on the trims.
How to keep your tote cleaner for longer
- Carry food and drinks in a separate pouch or container.
- Empty it at the end of each week so crumbs and grit don't build up.
- Hang it on a hook rather than leaving it on the floor.
- Spot clean marks as soon as you notice them, while they are easiest to lift.

Frequently asked questions
Can you put a tote bag in the washing machine?
Most plain cotton and canvas totes can go in the machine on a cool, gentle cycle with mild detergent. Avoid machine washing totes made from jute or with leather trims or coatings, and always check the care label first.
Will a cotton tote bag shrink in the wash?
Cotton can shrink with high heat. Washing cool, around 30°C, and air drying rather than tumble drying keeps shrinkage to a minimum.
How often should I wash my tote bag?
If you use it for food shopping or carry it daily, a wash every few weeks is a good habit, with spot cleaning in between. Occasional-use totes only need washing when they look or smell like they need it.
