"Vintage wash", "garment dyed", "snow wash", "mineral wash", "sun fade". These terms appear all over premium streetwear, and they are the reason a new hoodie can feel broken-in from the first wear. Here is what each one actually means, how it is done, and how to look after washed clothing so it keeps its character.
What is garment dyed?
Most clothes are made from fabric that was dyed first and cut and sewn afterwards. Garment dyeing reverses that order: the finished piece is sewn in undyed fabric, then the whole garment is dyed.
Because the dye settles slightly differently into seams, ribbing and thread, garment-dyed clothing has a softer, more lived-in colour with subtle variation along the edges. The dyeing process also pre-shrinks and softens the garment, so it usually changes less in your own wash.
What is vintage wash?
Vintage wash is a finishing process that makes new clothing look and feel as if it has been worn and washed for years. Garments are washed with softeners and sometimes enzymes or stones to fade the colour slightly and break down the surface stiffness. The result is a muted, slightly uneven tone and a softer handle.
See it on the Vintage Washed Oversized Cotton T-Shirt (260 GSM, 100% cotton) and the Vintage Washed Frayed-Hem Hoodie, which adds a deliberately raw hem.
What is enzyme wash?
Enzyme washing uses natural enzymes to gently eat away the tiny protruding fibres on cotton. It softens the fabric, reduces fuzz and gives a smooth, slightly faded surface without harsh chemicals or heavy abrasion.
What is acid wash and snow wash?
Despite the name, acid wash does not usually involve acid. Pumice stones are soaked in a bleaching agent and tumbled with the garment. Where the stones touch, colour is lifted, creating a high-contrast, marbled pattern. Snow wash is a close cousin with a finer, more speckled effect, like frost on the fabric.
Try the look with the Snow Washed Oversized Cotton T-Shirt or the Premium Snow Washed Oversized Sweatshirt (360 GSM, 100% cotton).
What is mineral wash?
Mineral wash creates a soft, cloudy fade that sits between vintage and acid wash: more texture than a vintage wash, but gentler than acid or snow wash. It suits boxy tees and relaxed fits. See the Mineral Wash Boxy Cotton T-Shirt (275 GSM).
What is sun fade?
Sun fade mimics the way colour bleaches unevenly when a garment spends summers in the sun: shoulders and raised areas look lighter than the rest. It is a finishing effect applied during production, and it gives hoodies and sweatpants a relaxed, weathered feel. See our Sun Fade Boxy Detachable Fur Hoodie.
Quick comparison
| Finish | How it's done | Look | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garment dyed | Garment dyed after sewing | Soft, rich, slight variation at seams | Hoodies, sweatshirts, tees |
| Vintage wash | Softener and enzyme or stone wash | Muted, broken-in | Oversized tees, hoodies |
| Enzyme wash | Enzymes remove surface fuzz | Smooth, subtly faded | Cotton basics |
| Acid / snow wash | Bleach-soaked pumice stones | Marbled or speckled contrast | Statement tees and sweatshirts |
| Mineral wash | Controlled fading treatment | Cloudy, textured fade | Boxy tees |
| Sun fade | Uneven fading effect | Lighter high points | Hoodies, sweatpants |
Why washed clothing is worth it
- Comfort from day one: no stiff break-in period.
- Less shrinkage at home: the garment has already been washed during production.
- Every piece is slightly different: washes create natural variation, so no two are identical.
- Ages gracefully: small marks and fading blend into the finish instead of standing out.
How to care for washed and garment-dyed clothing
- Wash the first few times separately or with similar dark colours, as some excess dye can release.
- Wash cold and inside out.
- Avoid bleach; it will change the finish unevenly.
- Air dry away from direct sunlight to preserve the colour you chose.

Frequently asked questions
Does vintage wash fade more over time?
It will continue to soften gradually, but most of the fading happens during production. Cold washing keeps further change slow and even.
Is garment dyed better quality?
It is not automatically better, but it gives a softer handle and richer, more characterful colour, and it reduces shrinkage at home.
Why does my acid wash tee look different from the photo?
Each piece is washed individually, so the pattern varies. That variation is part of the design.
