How to Stop T-Shirts Shrinking: 8 Simple Laundry Rules

BALIVENO Essential Cotton T-Shirt, 260 gsm 100% cotton oversized tee

To stop T-shirts shrinking, keep heat away from them: wash at 30°C or cooler on a gentle cycle, skip high-heat tumble drying, and reshape them while damp before drying flat or on a hanger. Heat, agitation and over-drying are what cause cotton tees to tighten up, so controlling those three things does most of the work. Below you will find the simple laundry rules that keep a tee the size you bought it, what to do if one has already shrunk, and how fabric choice plays a part.

Why T-shirts shrink in the first place

Cotton fibres are stretched and held under tension while yarn is spun and fabric is knitted. When a cotton garment meets warm water and tumbling, those fibres relax and draw back together, and the fabric becomes shorter and narrower. Hot tumble drying adds more heat and movement, which is why many people notice the biggest change after the dryer rather than the wash itself.

Knitted fabrics such as T-shirt jersey are made from interlocking loops, so they can move and tighten more readily than a firm woven fabric. That is also why length often changes more than width.

8 rules to stop T-shirts shrinking

  1. Read the care label first. It is the most reliable guide for that specific garment. The BALIVENO tees featured below, for example, are all labelled to machine wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle.
  2. Wash cool. A 30°C wash, or a cold wash, is gentler on cotton than a hot one and is enough for everyday freshness with a modern detergent.
  3. Choose a gentle or delicate cycle. Less agitation means less stress on the fibres.
  4. Do not overload the drum. Clothes need room to move freely; a packed drum creates more friction and longer spin times.
  5. Use a lower spin speed. A very fast spin can twist and compress knitted fabric.
  6. Go easy on the dryer. If the label allows tumble drying, use the low heat setting and take the tee out while it is still very slightly damp. Air drying is the gentlest option of all.
  7. Reshape while damp. Give the tee a gentle shake, pull the body and sleeves back to shape, and smooth the side seams so they hang straight.
  8. Dry flat or on a wide hanger. Drying flat stops heavier tees stretching at the shoulders, while a wide hanger works well for lighter ones.

Washing and drying settings at a glance

Setting Lower shrinkage risk Higher shrinkage risk
Wash temperature Cold or 30°C 40°C and above
Cycle Gentle or delicates Cottons or heavy-duty
Spin Low to medium Maximum
Drying Air dry, flat or hung High-heat tumble dry
Drying time Remove while slightly damp Dry until bone dry and hot
Ironing Low heat, inside out High heat directly on print

Does fabric weight make a difference?

Heavier tees feel more substantial and hold their shape well when worn, but they are still cotton and still respond to heat. The same rules apply whether you own a lightweight tee or a heavyweight one. If you want to compare weights properly, our guide to what GSM means in clothing explains how fabric weight is measured and what the numbers mean.

Washed finishes such as snow wash and mineral wash have their own care considerations too. Our explainer on garment-dyed and vintage wash finishes covers how those effects are created and why they look the way they do.

Sizing up with shrinkage in mind

If you love an oversized look and tend to wash warmer than you should, it can be tempting to size up. A better approach is to choose the size you want to wear and then protect it with cool washing and gentle drying. Check the size chart on each product page and compare the chest and length measurements with a tee you already own and like the fit of.

What to do if a T-shirt has already shrunk

You can often recover some length and width from a cotton tee that has tightened up. It will not always return to its original size, but it is worth trying before you give up on it.

  1. Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of hair conditioner or gentle fabric softener.
  2. Soak the tee for around 20 to 30 minutes so the fibres relax.
  3. Gently squeeze out the water without wringing or twisting.
  4. Roll the tee in a dry towel to remove more moisture.
  5. Lay it flat and gently stretch the body and sleeves back towards the original shape.
  6. Leave it to air dry flat, adjusting the shape once or twice as it dries.

For general cotton care, the same principle applies throughout: cool water, gentle cycles and low heat.

Frequently asked questions

Do T-shirts shrink in a cold wash?

Cold or cool washing is far gentler and greatly reduces the chance of shrinkage. Most of the change in cotton happens with heat, so pairing a cool wash with air drying is the safest routine.

Is it the washing machine or the dryer that shrinks T-shirts?

Both can play a part, but high-heat tumble drying is often the bigger culprit because it combines heat with constant movement. Using low heat, or skipping the dryer, makes a noticeable difference.

Should I iron my T-shirts?

You can, at a low temperature. Turn the tee inside out and avoid ironing directly over any print, which is exactly what the BALIVENO care labels recommend.
