The best way to clean a PU leather bag is gently: wipe it with a soft, damp microfibre cloth and a drop of mild soap, dry it straight away, and never soak it, machine wash it or put it near direct heat. PU (polyurethane) leather is a coated fabric, so most care is about protecting that surface coating. This guide covers everyday cleaning, stain removal, the products to avoid and how to store a faux leather bag so it keeps its shape for longer.
What PU leather is, and why it needs different care
PU leather, often sold as faux leather or vegan leather, is made by applying a polyurethane coating to a fabric backing. That top layer gives it the smooth look and slight sheen of leather, but it behaves differently. It doesn't absorb conditioner the way real hide does, and it can crack, peel or go tacky if it is scrubbed hard, soaked or exposed to strong solvents and heat.
The good news is that a coated surface is easy to wipe clean. Most everyday marks lift off with water and a little soap, which means a few minutes of regular care does more than any specialist product. Before you start, check the care label or product description. Our BALIVENO faux leather crossbody bag, for example, has a faux leather outer with a 100% polyester lining, dark grey hardware and a zip-top closure, so the outside and inside need slightly different treatment.
What you'll need
- Two soft microfibre cloths (one damp, one dry)
- Lukewarm water
- A mild, unscented washing-up liquid or gentle hand soap
- A soft-bristled brush (an old soft toothbrush works) for seams and hardware
- Cotton buds for small marks
- Acid-free tissue paper or a clean cotton T-shirt for stuffing
How to clean a PU leather bag: step by step
- Empty it completely. Take everything out, open every pocket and tip out crumbs and dust. Remove any detachable straps. The crossbody bag's adjustable wrist and shoulder straps unclip, which makes them easy to clean separately.
- Dust the surface. Wipe the whole bag with a dry microfibre cloth to remove loose grit. Rubbing a wet cloth over dust can leave fine scratches on the coating.
- Mix a gentle solution. Add a few drops of mild soap to a bowl of lukewarm water. You want a very light mix, not a bubbly bath.
- Wipe, don't scrub. Dip a cloth in the solution, wring it out until it's barely damp, then wipe the outside in small, light circles. Work panel by panel, from the top down.
- Rinse with a clean damp cloth. Go over the bag again with a cloth dampened in plain water to lift off any soap residue, which can otherwise leave a dull film.
- Clean seams and hardware. Use the soft brush, barely damp, along stitching and around zips and metal fittings. Dry metal parts straight away.
- Dry it immediately. Pat the whole bag dry with the second cloth, then leave it open to air-dry at room temperature, away from radiators, hairdryers and direct sunlight.
How to clean the lining
Linings collect the most mess: make-up, pen marks and the odd leaking snack. Turn the lining out as far as it will go without straining the seams, shake it out and use a lint roller or the brush attachment of a vacuum on a low setting. For marks, dab with a cloth barely dampened in your soapy solution, then blot with a dry cloth. Leave the bag open until the lining is fully dry before you zip it up, so it doesn't trap damp and start to smell.
Removing common stains
| Stain | What to try | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| General grime and handle marks | Mild soap solution on a damp cloth, then a plain-water wipe | Abrasive sponges or scouring pads |
| Grease or oil | Blot first, then a drop of washing-up liquid on a damp cloth, worked gently | Rubbing hard, which spreads the oil |
| Ink | Act quickly; dab with a damp soapy cotton bud, testing on a hidden spot first | Nail polish remover or strong solvents |
| Make-up | A damp soapy cloth, working from the edge of the mark inwards | Oil-based make-up removers on the outer coating |
| Water marks | Wipe the whole panel evenly with a barely damp cloth, then dry | Heat to speed up drying |
Whatever the stain, always patch test on a hidden area first, such as the base or under a flap. If a mark won't shift after a couple of gentle attempts, stop. Repeated rubbing in one spot is the quickest way to wear through the coating.
What not to do with faux leather
- Don't machine wash or soak it. Water can get behind the coating and into the backing fabric, which encourages peeling.
- Don't use alcohol, bleach, acetone or baby wipes with alcohol. They can dry out or dissolve the surface.
- Don't use real-leather conditioners unless the product says it's suitable for faux leather. PU doesn't absorb them and they can leave a sticky film.
- Don't dry it with heat. Radiators, hairdryers and strong sun can make the coating brittle.
The same rules apply to other PU pieces in your wardrobe. Our BALIVENO Leather Bomber Jacket has a 100% polyurethane (PU) leather outer with a 60% cotton, 40% polyester lining, so a gentle wipe-clean approach suits it too.
How to store a PU leather bag
Good storage prevents most of the problems people try to fix with cleaning. Stuff the bag lightly with acid-free tissue or a clean cotton T-shirt so it keeps its shape, close the zip and store it upright. Keep it in a breathable cotton dust bag rather than a plastic one, which can trap moisture. Avoid hanging it by the strap for long periods, as this can stretch the strap and stress the joins. Finally, keep it away from direct sunlight and heat, and don't squash it under heavier bags.
If you carry a more casual bag on rotation, the same cleaning-little-and-often principle applies. Our guide on how to clean a tote bag covers fabric bags, and if you are weighing up materials, read our look at alternatives to leather accessories.
A simple care routine
- Weekly: a quick dry dust and a look inside for crumbs or leaks.
- Monthly or when marked: the full damp-cloth clean above.
- Straight away: blot spills before they set.
- Every time you put it away: stuff, close and store upright out of the sun.
If you'd like a second option to rotate with, our faux leather crossbody bag measures 27.9 × 20.3 × 3.8 cm, with inside zip and slip pockets that help keep the lining tidy.
Frequently asked questions
Can you put a PU leather bag in the washing machine?
No. Machine washing soaks the backing fabric and tumbles the coating, which can lead to cracking and peeling. Stick to a damp cloth and mild soap.
Can I use baby wipes on faux leather?
Only alcohol-free, fragrance-free wipes, and only for a quick spot clean. Follow with a dry cloth. For a proper clean, a damp microfibre cloth with mild soap is gentler and leaves less residue.
Why is my PU leather bag peeling, and can it be fixed?
Peeling usually comes from age, heat, harsh cleaners or moisture getting under the coating. Small areas can sometimes be disguised with faux leather repair kits, but the damage can't be fully reversed, which is why gentle cleaning and cool, dry storage matter so much.
